“IL CAPO”- A portrait of marble by Yuri Ancarani

We saw Il Capo on show at the Whitechapel Gallery. It is a totally stunning movie showing the extraction process of marble.

Yuri Ancarani, the filmmaker behind Il Capo, Ancarani spent nearly a year filming on Monte Bettolgi in the Carrara region of the Apuan Alps and  he describes marble quarries as ” places so unbelievable and striking, they almost feel like they are big theaters or sets”

Ancarani follows a quarry boss while he guides his men through the extraction process: “I was so taken by the chief. How he can move gigantic marble blocks, but his own movements are light”

Il Capo was on show at the Whitechapel Gallery until October 12, 2014.
