What is Mycelium

Mycelium is by definition the vegetative part of a fungus or fungus-like bacterial colony, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae. The mass of hyphae is sometimes called shiro, especially within the fairy ring fungi.
Fungal colonies composed of mycelium are found in and on soil and many other substrates.

The production process starts from low-value materials, which cannot find any other valuable application in the industry. By feeding on the organic matter, the mycelium converts the low-value input matter into a product with high added value, characterised by unique aesthetics.

Mogu produces its products by growing selected strains of mycelium on pre-engineered substrates made of agro-industrial residues.
By tuning the matrix configuration, they harvest different materials within short timeframes and with limited use of resources.
Fungal mycelium acts as a reinforcement to the matrix structure, creating 100% plastic-free and coherent material composite. At the end of the production process, mycelium materials are inertized by slow drying, for reduced energy consumption. The resulting products are completely stable, safe, durable and biodegradable.

Mycelium Flooring

From agro-industrial residues to luxury living environments, Mogu Floor is a collection of bio-based resilient tiles for interior design and architecture. These designed modular floor tiles consist of a mycelium composite core, coated with a proprietary formulation of 90% bio-based resins.
Mogu Floor products replace traditional industrial pigments with low-value biomasses, such as corn crops, rice straw, spent coffee grounds, discarded seaweed and clamshells. The six colours currently available are provided by the specific biomasses used and are UV resistant.

Furniture & Objects

Mycelium can be grown to produce furniture and objects instead of manufacturing them. The moulds giving shape to the items are filled with agricultural waste, water and mycelium. The mix will be stored, waiting for the structure to grow and gain its strength.
Once fully grown and dried, the mix turns into a piece of furniture or product. At the end of its useful life as a product, this can be used as fertilizer.
